The menu entries for these objects need a background just like in CR. They should all be in the same style with different colours for the three types, Imo. A good ansatz has been made by Spell. But we need a concise style for all objects. So if anyone wants to create three background objects please do so. Pls also use this this thread for discussions about the style. I personally like the shape by Spell, with colors Blue for goal, Yellow for rule, Green for environment.

Spell, actually. Though I do not remember him providing any object files.

Ty, he just provided an ansatz.

I could do it but... do not know if I have time for it. Lets put it this way: If no one else takes the job, I will do it.

EDIT: OK, I'll do it :-)
What size should it be?

Ok, here we go for now:

(CC-BY licenced)

As soon I as I know which size it should be I will finish this one (by adding an appropriate background).
Probably I should draw a rounded rectangle (the one that Spell had) - it looked nice

You misunderstood me, sorry if I did not made it clear enough. This thread is about the background graphics(just the red square in Spell's example), these need to be equal for all goal, rule and environment objects, apart from the colour. For the parkour goal on could have for example have two running clonks towards the finish line, on that (brown/blue)? background.
Parent - - By AlteredARMOR [ua] Date 2010-02-09 10:24
OK, my bad :-)
So you just need squares of different color. What size should the background images have?

I think any multiple of 64 can do. Maybe someone else can say something sensible about this.
Parent - By Günther [de] Date 2010-02-10 01:24
A power of two (2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, ...) fits nicely into a texture on the GPU, but mostly it's a matter of using enough pixels to look good and few enough not to waste RAM and internet bandwidth, which isn't a very precise dimension...

So, here is a little try from me, but its just a rough example of what I've thought.

PS: Ok, maybe some soft shadow would look nice, too.

my suggestion:

Template without shine

Enviroment Green
Goal Blue
Rule Gray

could also use template colour as rule colour.
all are bit 3d, and shine a bit (about 10 px shineway)

Yeah, I like this pretty much, way better than mine. :)

I don't like the colors at all, they nearly haven't got any saturation - a bit stronger would be nice.
Parent - By MimmoO Date 2010-02-09 18:28
that was my aim - they shouldnt be as saturated as the other suggestions here, because i think that the background is not that important, thus they should not drain the attention
Parent - By Zapper [de] Date 2010-02-09 18:29
I'd keep the sharp edges like in the template (no blur)
Parent - By B_E [de] Date 2010-02-09 18:29 Edited 2010-02-09 18:31
Hm, quite similar to the original one:
Maybe too strong, the whole thins should still be darkened a bit. I actually prefer red as a rule symbol, since it is not as dark as the blue - all others are relatively light and friendly. Done with Blender and Yaf(a)ray.

Another idea for goals: We might use different designs for fulfilled/unfulfilled goals.

For instance, the (current) desaturated, dark background when it's not fulfilled and a more saturated version when you're done. Also, the goal line could be broken.

For gold mine, the gold could be put into a lorry when done. Wipfs are put on a leash when rescued, etc.

Alternatively, unfulfilled goals could be presented in a frame, which is filled when the goal is done.

Hm, aren't the unfulfilled goals more important and therefore more better candidates for the bright colors? The fulfilled goals could be desaturated (which can be done by the engine in a pixel shader) with a bright star/checkmark/whatever.

I first want to see a proper concept how to show several goals in the HUD

I'd attached a .xcf file where you could simply change the color. Here are some previews for comparison-reasons.

Any suggestions on how the rule and the environment images should look?
Reply
Parent - By MimmoO Date 2010-02-09 17:24 Edited 2010-02-09 17:27
my suggestion:

Enviroment should be green/greenish, or may even colourhcangin depending on the landscape (desert: more yellow etc)

Goals should be Blue imo. iirc, in CR they were also blue

Rules should be gray, but im open here for other ideas.

Goals should be displayed in the top right corner. maybe in one line, and if there are too many of them, they will be displayed smaller.
enviroments as rules are displayed together in a line below, but much smaller, maybe 1/4 of the size.

another idea:  all those object are displayed verry small together in one line/bunch. if you hover over them, the goal or whatever will be displayed bigger, as long as you hover over it (like the bar-thingie from apple mac)

edit: whoops, i somehow understood "how they should be displayed"... oops^^, well, i think this can be the parent of a discussion about how to display then

Parent - - By MimmoO Date 2010-02-09 15:42 Edited 2010-02-09 15:55
i dont like them. imo they should have a small 3d-effect as spells goal had. about the colour: i think green would fit most. about a pattern: i dont think a background needs that. maybe a verry low and small noise, but nothing as in the post above
Parent - By AlteredARMOR [ua] Date 2010-02-09 15:49
Come on, guys! Of course they should have dimension. And background texture must not mess up with the exact image that will be depicted on the foreground.
But right now I am too far away from tools I need to create theese images.
I will post them in the evening when I come home.

Imo, MCs example is even not enough sharp-edged. The edges should be not this wide.

This one is better. I'd also try shaded edges.

EDIT.: Maybe something simmiliar to that:

I like the glow around the object. It gives the whole picture a finished look

I'd like to see how it looks when you change the glow around the object to a shadow (aka color to black and maybe a bit sharper edges)

I just want to mention that a colored background to distinguish goals, rules and environment objects is not necessary at all. They won't be shown together anyway. While using a common background might be OK just so that the stuff on top gets visible better, you might as well just use a simple piece of parchment or a black shadow. Since the goal is showed all the time, we might actually want to NOT use a too bright colorful box.

(EDIT: I vote for the parchment)
Parent - - By Ringwaul [ca] Date 2010-02-19 02:45
Something like this? I need something to background the icons for current environment objects (and the grass I am making), anyways.

Hm. On this piece of parchment you can draw ABSOULUTELY anything you like. Personally I prefer images which would be drawn on this kind of background to be schematic colorless wireframes (though they would be hard to distinguish one from another)

Parent - - By AlteredARMOR [ua] Date 2010-02-19 12:54
Yeah this is exactly what I mean - a sketch on a parchment (looks GREAT, thought does not apply ingame - we want something bright and colourfull... oh, pity :-(

Parent - - By Newton [de] Date 2010-02-19 13:00
Do we? I want something that does not always attract attention towards itself. It should be in the background because I most possibly only look at it at the beginning of the round one time (and after that only at the text beneath or at the scoreboard). Also, imagine on the top bar, there will be a wooden bar in the background, it won't be see-through. A parchment on a wooden board would be pretty unobstrusive and fitting while a sparkling red box with thick black borders will look out of place.
