You cannot 'tumble' the camera in orthogonal view.

Every time I'm not allowed to rotate the camera, or when I select 'View Left Side' and it shows the right (and vice versa), and best of all the "serious frowning upon editing an armature after you've done anything to it" is driving me insane.
Maya is a torture device! Whoever programmed the camera navigation is an evil, evil person.

You could, for example, start modelling your model by creating the silhuette. That works surprisingly well - most of the time. :)
Also you can probably use the edge as a particle emittert, for example - but that is most likely done in a different way in Maya.
