Because I'm going to pick the patches with gitk, and I don't want to waste time sticking hg branch labels on the commits. If you all really want to have the stable branch in the same repository, I'll figure out how to do that efficiently. But maybe ck can have a look and check whether using a second repository on hg.openclonk.org wouldn't be even easier than using hg branches.
