Doesn't need "cuteness", just less blurry and non-brown textures. I'm thinking a little bit of the Pokemon-Formula: bright, clear patches of colors on bodies with many distinct features. Mostly ends up looking cool.
Especially if this animal should be rare and/or useful, it shouldn't look too much like an "ego shooter monster" ;)
Edit: Actually, brown itself is not the problem.
It's rather the indistinct mix of brown colors.
