It works, and significantly decreases the fading distance, because the color is more saturated. Grey as a default color is pretty good, because the fade is still visible, but the color is also more visible than with a white color default. This all comes from normalization. Just make an example with low alpha and normalize that, you'll see how it results in the example on the right.
