Well but looking 3Dish is not a problem. For example, making ridges dark is good because you bake self-shadows into it (which we do not get from rendering).

The only problem is if you have 3D cues from directional light, e.g. if the light seems to come from above. Because that will look wrong when shaded with light coming from below.
