My experience with Unity is similar. Artists like it a lot because they can give the assets in whatever way they want but as a dev, I hate it. When working with it as a beginner (which I still am) I frequently had to ask more experienced devs how to solve certain problems and it often involved ticking a special checkbox or lowering some value by .1 until the behaviour was correct.
