Updated version: Fixed the third problem, made the second problem less severe (essentially I'm falling back to GPU scaling here), first problem is proving to be difficult. Looks good up to about 5x now.
(the original image is 40x20, btw - so the thumbnail above is 3,5x and the full version is about 12x)
