Hey, we got referenced from TIGSource again, even though they spell "Clonk" with caps! ;)

The game in question, Terraria looks mildly relevant. If only for that, the FoW works roughly as I'd imagine it. It also reminds me that we might want to look into pushing the "exploration" aspects of the game a bit more...

generating random underground caverns with monsters or other random threats ( the entry collapsing one you open the chest, the room filling with lava etc., think indiana jones) in it. make mining a bit more challenging, place random rare objects in chests, just as in for example minecraft or that game, terraria.

Yeah, I have been toying around with a few scenario ideas along these lines. Never seemed to quite come together, though. I especially would have liked monsters to actually be more threatening - in that one loam wouldn't be enough to get rid of them. Maybe allow them to come digging behind you once awoken?

Yepp, interesting and lasting (so that you can not easily get rid of them) AI enemies are my goal!

You could still just dig around that :)

Still an obstacle though.

There are just thousands of suited monsterts in jump and run genres. If we make them stupid, that's just fine cause those dumb moving creatures usually appear in really great numbers.

Also traps or surprising monsters can make use of their surpriseing appearance, although their ai's really nothing.

Things like dodging should still be possible, which is getting harder with larger numbers. Imho, a fun-to-fight AI creates a nice balance between action and reaction.

Agreed. That's what I also would like to (partly) achieve with my concepts of AIs.
A "better" FoW would be a blessing for that, nevertheless :)
