Currently we are lacking a critical mass (read players at all) for self-sustaining online play. What I mean by that is the fact that you can't just say, oh let's play a round online, cause there are not any games hosted.
Well we all know the vicious circle where there is no point in hosting cause there are no players, and there is no point in looking for games cause there are no hosts.

So my goal would be to attain this critical mass at least once per week, and invite new players via the blog (to play with the devs and other players of course). Maybe post some screens or video captures of cool rounds
from time to time. Which might attract more players. The idea is quite simple and straightforward, just pick a time slot of around 2-4 hours to play a few rounds with a group of 4-10 players and the rest will go by itself.

All remains is figure out the best time slot, so if you want to play select the times you are mostly available during the week and I will try to organize a thing.

Cool. I would attend regularly :)

This is a great Idea Maikel. It might frustrate new players if there are no online games when they come online, but we can change it his way.

Also, we should make more advertisement, like uploading videos to youtube or post good pictures somewhere in social networks or forums, as maikel already mentioned. I could make some nice pictures and share it on g+ for example (where was the screenshot-key btw.?)

Documentation of all shortcuts is on F1 - just in case you need something else ;)

Mabe info sheets in universities that offer games engineering classes? OC might be relevant to the interests of some students.

Actually we are in need of title pictures for the scenarios we already have. These should be interesting and representative screenshots (without HUD elements or names floating around) in a size of 640x480 pixels. But attention: the titles need to still look when rescaled to 200x150 pixels so for the screenshots to be eligible for titles, you must zoom in big time.

Screenshots can also be made from records (zoom with F5/F6 and select player with one of the arrows) if a nice situation occurs.

Nice work Maikel!:)

I will try to attend this Clonk-session as often as possible:D

I already see a slight preference for Sunday evening, for which I hoped and also expected actually. But I'll leave the poll open until Saturday afternoon or so, and will write a blog entry then to attract some more players.
But for now it seems we can start this Sunday evening already.

I would love to play online but I only get 26 kb a second at max. :(
Parent - - By Caesar [de] Date 2012-10-19 23:22
I don't know how much OpenClonk actually uses, but iirc CR was playable with a 56k modem. The crucial thing for online play are stable pings.

I wish I had faster internet. Oh well. Too bad. :\
Parent - - By Ringwaul [ca] Date 2012-10-20 04:01
As long as that stable ping is < 250ms :(

Damn ocean.

The speed of light in cables under water is the same as the speed of light in cables underground ;)

Unfortunately, transporting internet through the ocean makes it susceptible to pirates. Therefore causing packet loss. True story.

So I think the night went pretty well all in all!

I'll probably upload some screen shots in the near future and maybe even a short video if I find the time...

First problem is to keep this going however, since I am not there next week on Sunday, we need at least two people to host, which should not be so hard to organize.
In the end we want the night to become self-sustaining and not depend on some devs hosting rounds. So next time take initiative and just host some rounds, people
will surely come!

Also feedback on the scenarios is very much appreciated, so please share them in the relevant boards in this forum!

Hm, may I ask for the third screenshot with high resolution?
Parent - By Sven2 [de] Date 2012-10-29 02:19
You may ask, but I won't be able to supply it unless someone has recorded the round. :(

I took the screenshot at that resolution.
- - By Zapper [de] Date 2012-10-21 22:10
I have some nice screenshots, too.

Will post them tomorrow or so.. :)

And I'll see into making a video of some rounds or just sending Maikel some .avis so he can compile them into one video(?)
Parent - By Maikel Date 2012-10-22 09:33
Yes that would be nice or just provide me with records and indicate the sections (in frames) which you appreciate.

I wish I could make a .gif of when I used a wind scroll to try and kill Newton, but then I ran forward and blew myself off of the map. But the replay won't work :(

Until the replay is fixed, let this comfort you:

What software did you use to make that?
Parent - By Zapper [de] Date 2012-10-28 15:12
I used Fraps to record from Clonk, VirtualDub to cut and crop and some googled avi-to-gif-program to convert to a gif (can check which one it was when I am back home at around 19:00 or so)
Parent - By Zapper [de] Date 2012-10-28 18:57
PS:
The program I used to convert .avi to .gif was:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/openavitogif/
short descriptions: http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/openavitogif-generate-animated-gif-images-from-avi-videos/
I believe I used every third or fourth frame and adjusted the frame-delay accordingly

Just a reminder for tomorrow evening, I won't be there at the start, my train arrives at nine in Hamburg so please do host a few rounds, if you are able, and gather interesting replays.
