Up Topic Development / Scenario & Object Development / Settlement Development - Résumé

Hi everyone!

With this thread I'd like to announce me quitting active work on the project. My final exam is about to come (one part next April, the second next October). Which in law study means that serious learning effort is necessary (8 hours a day is recommended :( ).
While this consumes an awful lot of time, next to my other social commitments there will be no time for OC. So at least until next October this is the end for me.

This also means that my time overlooking the settlement development is over. It's been over a year now since I wrote the Design Document and almost everything is done. I will summarise what is left in this thread. Of course, there is no need to actually do these tasks ;)
Also, I have committed some stuff lying around in my repository. Maybe someone wants to make use of this (I credited Ringwaul and Matthi, just in case you two are wondering). But first, what is left with settlement?

I struck out almost all tasks in the DD. Only a few things untouched remain of which the bigger tasks are: Big Mushrooms, Cotton and the Inventor's Lab.
Ringwaul made his awesome sketches on the lab and I think Zapper already started on the cotton. Also, I left you guys with ugly graphics for cotton (the item, see Objects/Items/Resources/Cotton) and cloth (l.c. Cloth.ocd) which you might want to change.
I always loved the idea of the mushrooms as underground trees but alas, it never came alive!

I would also love to see the recycling option in the sawmill / foundry. Especially since the metal recycling was to play a major part in Raiders of the Lost Castle (see below).

Zapper also started on the mechanisms and really put some nice work into the energy system. What is left in the DD are vague concepts about what to come, more power plants, what to do with the mechanisms and crystal. Nothing big.
My last call would be to set someone start thinking about castle part like structures (castle parts as in the stuff from CR's knights pack) to cover up your base and actually make it look like a base. I always imagined this to be castle-ish rock walls enhanced by industrish metall plates and steampunky stuff. But whatever :)

A few notes on the three four committs:

Loom model: Matthi made this awesome model (watch the animation!) during the OC meeting but I never came to finish (or to be more precise: even seriously start with) the texture.

Hatch: Ringwaul once sent me this cute object. But I guess it won't come in handy unless we get some basements.

Raiders of the Lost Castle: The thread pretty much explaines everything. I never came far with it. :(

Flightless Bird: (almost forgot this one); another cool model I let Matthi down with! The flightless bird also explained in one of my threads. Hope someone will script it! (and please think of a cool name!)

What is left to say? I will continue reading the forum from time to time and even write things eventually but I won't start scripting anything or so. I will try and see that the remaining changes I made to my editor will be available soon but afterwards I guess that's done for now.

So long and thanks for all the fish!

That's a shame, to loose you for such a long time. Especially since you have done a great job so far in both organizing and creating.

I hope you will attend some (non)OC meetings in Hamburg, and wish you luck in the exams of course ;)

Sounds to much like a goodbye somehow, not intended though... you'll be around luckily.

As far as settlement development is concerned, we need a new organizer now!

Good luck with everything!

By "final exam" do you mean something like a thesis (BA/MA/paper/..) or a real exam (like a quiz/test/exam)? If it's a paper, do you already have a topic? :)

No, the exam consists of 6 written tests plus one oral exam afterwards. A "real" exam!
We have a paper of about 40 pages during the specialisation (Schwerpunkt) which makes the university part of the final grade. But you are not allowed to choose a topic. Mine back then (one and a half year ago) was "The protection of patents on gene sequences after the Monsanto decision of the ECJ". ;)

That sounds hard :o

It was quite managable after getting into the topic!

The exam - but the paper sounds like a lot of effort, too. Especially since you probably have to read about a bazillion court decisions for that. But I have to admit it actually does not sound too boring :)

Ah, I see. Yes, the written exam is quite exhausting, even now!

It is sad that you have to go, though I truly respect your responsibility and frankness.

Your undertaking of managing OC's direction was a job that kept it alive, and gave us other developers a goal to work towards. While we are all losing our free time to responsibilities in our lives, I am glad for what you've devoted, and for setting a course in Newton's footsteps. Many of our core development team have had to move on, but their contributions to our project and our community I will never forget. For it is only through individuals with a stunning motivation that we can hope to rally together as a community, to develop a game simply for fun. Even though distance separated me from really being involved the network rounds, it's enough to work alongside all of you. It's enough to know that we can make something together that we can be proud of. That someone can sit down and just have fun with what we've created.

Best of luck over the next year! :)
