I think it would be very suitable to implement an engine for Los (line of sight) that can be toggled on and off depending on the scenario. This engine would be exellent in more realistic scenarios and such. Then you won't be able to see all layers underground. You can even dig a loam wall and hide behind it.

Edit: This should be integrated with a light system. Like you need a light source to see underground. Stronger light = more vision.

This is already supported, though it only affects FoW at the moment. Note how, in the attached screenshot, the FoW is much closer to the clonk when the position is not within its line of sight.
Also, Arne is not allowed to complain about JPG artifacts in the attachment.

Yeah, but that views too much of the ground IMO. There should be only a centimeter or so at most.

That would led to a lower FoW Resolution (FoWRes, Granularity of the Fog of War. Default: 64. Warning: smaller values will improve the looks of the FoW but will also severely increase processing times).

Perhaps this idea will be pursued further in the context of lighting the landscape (with shaders).

I would like it if there where different LoS modes.
E.g. that 'invisible' parts of the landscape are not totaly black,
but objects there aren't drawed.

And I think its important, that you can see a bit 'in' the material.
The 7K image below by Horus (Michael Zinn) illustrates this.

Awsome! Is this available somewhere on CCAN, Henry?

I think Horus relased it in his BetterPack.

I know a feature that's quite similar, it's used in TOU (Tunnels of the underworld), but if it's activated the game starts slowing down because of performance problems.

I know this game. :)

@Performance:
On my computer that has no real slow down. :I

Another game ("Gusanos", a Liero clone) uses very performant LoS. :)

Yeah, Exactly like in that game which btw has an awesome soundtrack, Also, it doesn't come on during bad performance. It is something you turn on yourself with a hot key..
