The Ogre format was chosen back then as the mesh format because we wanted to use some kind of standard (but sleek) format which can easily be exported from popular 3d modelling tools. Ogre being an open source 3D engine, this seemed like a reasonable choice. We did not anticipate that there will be so many problems with the ogre export tool for blender.
