I think traps and base defenses would be a very cool idea. If we get a working AI monster it would make them more necessary for survival.

Neither traps nor monsters ever proved to be any fun. I'm not saying it can't work, but you should consider it carefully.
I beg to differ on the first, the trapper in the western package was the most fun to play actually. With monsters I more or less agree, they are really hard to set up in such a way that they add real gameplay value.
