Maybe we can also make you dig straight if you are within 5 degrees of a horizontal or vertical line?

Shift currently is our "throw instead of use"-modifier, right? I agree that you'd want something like that, but we need a key for it. Do we already have something similar?
I shouldn't make anything more complicated, I agree. Should be more like "use it if needed, ignore if not".
I thought if the shift key, as most graphics software uses this key for direction restriction. I agree, that probably makes it only intuitive for graphics people :D

Maybe we could script a bulldozer which would create flat surface.
It could also push a bit of dirt in front so small holes would be filled. And it could have a drill for drilling through solid material.

I think digging ground even or straight tunnels are such a basic action that it should be easily done without further tools.
I think the landscape looks rather dull when surfaces are completely flat.

Hm, I always liked to have my buildings on even ground. Helps to prevent the lorrys or clonks or whatever from getting stuck at fundaments... but I see nobody else seems to want that.
No, but there are other ways to achieve this than shift as a modifier. I also prefer buildings with basements in groups at least with an even underground. We could also snap together buildings when constructed which are only a few pixels apart in the vertical direction.
