Take the name 'Matt' and 'es' as in 'escape', and pronounce it as one word without hesitating between the two parts.

That would be pronounced "Mätt" which is wrong. Say 'Mutt' + es from escape.
Ah, no, that's the german pronunciation:) You would usually pronounce 'Matt' like the german 'matt' (from chess) in the UK or over in America (although the 'm' is more emphasized in the name).
Well, I don't know if the name Matt is pronounced differently from the word matt (hearing example on the left) but from my experience so far, I doubt it. However, maybe a mother-tongue speaker will correct me.
And here I've been pronouncing it "Mathus" this whole time.
