Up Topic Development / Art Workshop / Freesound.org licenses

Here is another note about using the sound effects from freesound.org for our game:

Please refrain from adding any more sound files licensed under the CC Sampling+ license! Sound files under that license are not compatible with open source.

The CC licenses which are compatible with our game are CC-0, CC-BY 3.0 and CC-BY-SA 3.0. Of course, you can kindly ask the author of the file to re-license his work under CC-BY but please do that before adding the sound to the repository.
I asked the authors for all the older sound files already and most of those who are still active in the freesound community replied to me and approved of my request.

wtf are you doing? Yes, it's not public, deal with it!

Why does an Open Source project need a private board?
Parent - - By Caesar [de] Date 2012-01-20 00:28
E.g. there is a thread about giving me push access, fortunately it doesn't contain truly negative things. But if someone had wanted to oppose authorizing me and has personal doubts regarding me, well, I would not want to make these public if I were him. :Þ
Seriously, all projects have things that should be kept in the ~core team. This specially designed request for changing the license could not do too much damage, but you do not want it to be spammed around without coordination.

It's fine for isolated discussions, but cutting off somewhere in a public discussion just gives everyone without access a bad feeling.

Yeah, there shouldn't have been a link to the hidden board.

What one has to realize is that the alternative to a hidden board isn't a public discussion, but a discussion using IRC queries or private forum messages, email, or whatever. In fact, the hidden board doesn't seem to be all that popular compared to the public forum and other private message channels.

Regarding the munch sounds, I thought you made some a few years a ago, didn't you, Clonkonaut? (Something like "njom njom")

Otherwise I'll just ask Matthes if we can use the original one.

Yes, I made one, it's here: http://hg.openclonk.org/openclonk/rev/f80c2e6cfdb4.
Ringwaul replaced it with the two because they were 'gender-neutral'.

Sadly, there's a slight echo in my one.

Hm, you removed the ones I only sent a message to. However, I got fast replies from two of them, one of the Munch* sounds and the fan loop are now CC BY 3.0 :)

*spam*

I guess, only Ringwaul will be able to answer this but what is the background for CatapultLaunch? Is it made out of the two sounds? One of them is CC BY.

Was just about to send a message to request the author to change the license. However, I think with a bit of bass modulation the sound by schluppipuppie would be fine. I was never quite happy with the catapult launch sound.
Attachment: Catapult_Launch.ogg - License: CC-BY-3.0 (http://www.freesound.org/people/schluppipuppie/sounds/12833/) (10k)

Okay, still 3 people who did not change the license, probably because they never got back to freesound. I propose we better start looking for replacement for BlastLiquid*, Electrical and Munch1 - Munch2 is fine, so I will just remove Munch1 the loss is but little.

/e
Just looked at Electrical, it's CC-BY by now.

This is done. So what is with FuseLoop and Rock-/WoodHit*?

Those are the CC-BY-NC candidates. I sent them emails 3 weeks ago appealing to them to change it to CC-BY while explaining what is the problem with CC-BY-NC for open source projects.

These people definitely returned after the freesound.org redesign because before only Sampling+ was possible for a license. Since they did not reply for 3 weeks I assume they either don't care or don't want to change the license for their own reasons. I'd say, those files must be deleted from our repository then.
Too bad, the fuse sound was really good.

kwandalist just sent me a note that he changed the sound to CC-BY again. Just wanted to note it here.

No unfree sounds remain.
