I'm trying to set up a repository of the development files but I'm not sure how it works. Could someone give me a walkthrough or link to an explanation?

You just need the steps before "Get it to compile".

Follow up question: Do I even need to check out the repository if I just want to create some assets?
No, but I think it might come in handy. So I guess it's not a bad idea to set it up anyway :)
Do I need Visual Studio for compiling, too? Eclipse shows me an error that no exe file is present. Can I get that elsewhere?
>Can I get that elsewhere?
Yes, you can simply download a recent development snapshot and take all the .exe and .dll files from the .zip and put them into your
/planet
folder!
Alright, Visual Studio wouldn't let me continue without presenting a serial key anyway :P
I think there is a free "Express" version. Soo as long as you don't need "Premium", you should be fine :)
Also, if you are a student, you might have access to MS DreamSpark and even get the ProUltimateSuperElite for free!

Do you by any chance know what I need to do to get the .skeleton file that seems to be vital for 3d assets? I just started working on a stalactite but the model doesn't show up ingame.
You only need a .skeleton file when you have animations.
There is a program to preview Ogre3D meshes: Ogre Meshy. Can you see the mesh there?
