Here is The Grappler (grappling hook + rope):
I've made two different inventory images and now I do not know which one will look better:
Ingame model:
As for animation... do not know it can be applied. Before throwing a grappling hook one must swing it hard (but how are you gonna do this in mid-air?).

Here the rope looks better, I think (I vote for this one :-)
Ingame model:
Stored in grappler-1.blend (layer 1) - well, too many polies, I suppose (120), but unfortunately I didn't have time to reduce the count :-(

I was thinking of a small crossbow-like pistol with which one would shoot it
We can have crossbow-like one as "next version" of grappling hook :P
With better range and power, but that would be for settlement.

Hmm, I like the idea of swinging it around the clonk, but that would take a charge up which could severely limit "spider-man" like grappling. Or maybe the clonk could do one underhand swing mid-air to toss it, and on the ground he could swing it around himself and could launch it farther.
I think if we have a crossbow, we should probably allow it to shoot bolts as well (to differ from arrows, bolts could have knock-back or something).

I'd rather be able to shoot the grappler with a bow or musket :)
No, not a musket! :-)
Bow - maybe. I think I saw this somewhere

The low-poly is good, 120 faces is a reasonable amount. I should mention that it seems unnecessary to use sprites when we have a 3D model for it that looks good.
Well, you can give an even nicer look to the model if you apply subsurf modifier, but I do not now if OC 3D-engine can cope with this kind of stuff
After receiving Spell's advice I rerendered the grappler inventory image (it looks a bit better, I suppose).
