I've just realized that we haven't got a "metal bar" model (definitely one of the core objects) yet. Probably we should discuss how it should look like.
Well, as for me, the first thing I imagine when thinking about metal bar is (yeah...) metal rail:

Doesn't look very nice. I applied three different textures (all taken from various FREE sources) to see which one fits better. In fact I do not like neither of them - hope that somebody can suggest a better one.

Do we need to find another (not CR-like) solution of representing the piece of metal or should stick to the "rail"? I almost sure that we can come up with better ideas concerning the actual look of a metal bar

second and third looks good

In fact, we need either a 192x192 image without perspective or a 64x64 picture with perspective plus a version seen from the front (lets say: of the same size).

And, you must enable alpha, no black background texture. Then I will committ it for you to the repository.

Regarding the metal: Lets go with texture 2, looks very good.

Whow, I am a bit confused...
Can you please explain more clearly what are 192x192 images used for and what are 64x64 images used for?

So I understood that you want me provide:
(192x192 without perspective (ortographic) && 192x192 from the front (for ingame placement?)) || (64x64 with pespective && 64x64 from the front)
Or is it:
(192x192 w/o perspective) || (64x64 with perspective && 64x64 from the front) ?

P.S. By "ingame placement" I meant that it will be shown lying on the ground, "flying" towards a lorry etc. etc...
Yeah, and you want the background to be transparent - I get it.

Alright, if the "rail" concept is OK I will post it as soon as I get home...

OK: We need a picture and an ingame graphic. The picture ist always 64x64 and can/should have perspective. The ingame graphic must be a rendering from the side. (I was wrong about the 192x192)
That's it.

Ok, I get it. Thanks. I will make and post them as soon as possible.

I can tell you that this rail looks really awfull without perspective so I better stick to the second variant

If you like to take a look:

Edit:
Well, the more I look at it the more I think it is not that bad after all...
Don't know. Really.

Well, yeah. With this perspective it looks awfull :P

Looks good. :) Maybe the top and bottom sections could be a bit thicker in relation to the middle section?

Well, If really want to have a rail it should look like this. But I'm asking myself: do we really need a real metal rail?

EDIT: Oh, yeah, here it is. Want me to make something like this?

EDIT: When i made this one I thought of having something different than just a rail. (Especially if we are really going to implement rails in OC - personally I like this idea very much)

EDIT: The one I made was supposed to look more like a construction bar (the one that is used for metal constructions) though I had a problem finding some appropriate photos

Ok. How about this thicker?:

Hmm, looks fine. I think that all sections should be the same thickness, but maybe they are too thick right now. (or is that just the perspective? your in-game models look like the right size) One thing I should mention (though it doesn't affect your model) is that as you said, the metal in Clonk is a metal construction bar; I don't think it should look like a rail, because that's not something you'd build a structure with. ;)

But doesnt it look better this way?
Clonks are artistical creatures, which like original and unique design of things they use...

I guess first one was supposed to be rusted one, but it will look good as bar burried in earth(dirty, etc), while two other can be 'normal' bars, of course the in-earth one could get cleared, or something.

Hey, come on. Why would a metal RAIL (o_O) be burried in earth. Echo of the war? :-)

Why not? I love doing that in static scenario design; along with a burned lorry and some buildings. It adds visual variety to the map. It also adds an exploration component to settlement scenarios, which makes gameplay more interesting.
Parent - By AlteredARMOR [ua] Date 2010-02-08 16:51
Ok. Like I said: remnants of the long-gone clonk civilization

EDIT: You can talk to the developers about implementing different metal bar objects (possibly with different properties). From my side: I will create images for both textures

Burned lorry? ;)
(Okay then, silly old SetClrModulation)
Parent - By Asmageddon [pl] Date 2010-02-08 18:31
Some layered texture overlays function perhaps? I can see tons of uses, from making objects look "dirty", trough varying clonk "clothes" to different textures for vehicles(like when they are made from different metal, or something).
I think this is worth considering.
Also in CR there were metal bars burried in earth, but now when I think about it its kinda silly especially in these "You are first to uncover this land" scenarios...

I've taken a look at the metal blend of yours, and if we're going to use this as a real-time 3D model, you'll either want to get rid of those center bolts, or use a normal map instead.

normal map bake into texture

EDIT: I keep asking myself: "Why do they look like oriented in different directions while it is the same object rendered from the same camera just with different textures?"

Optical illusion, its because they are next to each other, and their bg is same as post bg, so brain "thinks" they are single image and tries to treat them like if they are single image, so it goes a bit crazy with perspective.

EDIT.: Just btw.: They are good.

I think the perspective makes the inventory images look weird; their dimensions don't look the same as the in-game models.

Parent - By AlteredARMOR [ua] Date 2010-02-08 19:13 Edited 2010-02-08 19:18
Believe me, they are the same :-)
I can remove perspective from inventory images but I'd rather not - kinda like them this way

EDIT: I fact if you remove perspective from them they will look too long and too thin which is definitely not very good
See how the optical illusion makes distant horizontal lines look longer than near lines?

Good. Maybe even very good. Anyway - its good(At least in my opinion)
But could you maybe make a bar instead of this? I'd like to at least see how it would look.

What do you mean by "bar"?

Parent - - By Ringwaul [ca] Date 2010-02-14 02:24
Hmm, I think he means something like this. I like your current model, though. It's the perfect shape of construction metal already.

how about more closer to the shape of a gold bar?

I don't think construction metal is ever cast like this.

Parent - - By Asmageddon [pl] Date 2010-02-14 12:20
Well, I doubt if it would ever have rail-like shape :P

Parent - By Ringwaul [ca] Date 2010-02-14 21:12
In construction, it almost always has this rotated 'H' shape.

I tought about something like this:

I think it would be quite optimal shape both for storing metal, and using it to forge something. I'm not saying it would be better. I'd just like to see how it would look.

I don't like this bar design. With the first metal piece you made, it made sense, because it was either already a perfect shape for construction material, or could simply be recast into the shape of a sword (or whatever else). With this bar design, one would have to recast it for it to be usable as construction material. You can't build a metal frame with gold-bar shaped metal.

I think he was just making a example of my suggestion, though it looks like leaving them as metal rails would be best
